Surnames in 17th Century?

Many of the Aristocracy's last names came from the name of their titles. So the Duke of Devonshire (just to pick an example at random,) might well be named Nethaniel Devonshire. Georgette Heyer's Regency novels are set mostly in the 18th century, but the names would still be good. Some are: Talent, Stornaway, Staple, Malvern, Broome, Charteris, Jettan, and Beauvallet. As you may notice, many of the upperclass last names were actually French.
