Why did the film Sunshine (2007) not take off?

I loved it. But I think it's biggest problem is that people were expecting a sci-fi movie with a bit of an apocalyptic twist. but they weren't expecting the horror movie / slasher turn the movie takes at the end. I think it's developed more of a cult following since then though.
